Conventional transformers are mature, efficient at line frequency, and well understood. SSTs add controllability and a direct path to a DC bus at the cost of design maturity and supply-chain readiness.
Use conventional transformers where AC distribution is final. Use SST design targets where MV-to-DC density and grid-forming interfaces justify the platform.
